The Staff and Students Retreat for the First Term was led by Rev. Fr. Raj Irudaya S. J. on August 6, 2008 at the Gurukul Schwans Memorial Chapel.
Dr. Raj Irudaya, a Johannine scholar, is currently the Rector of the
Aikiya Alayam, Arul Kadal Jesuit Seminary, Mylapore. The theme of the Retreat was "Mission of Jeus Today: Johannine Perspectives and challenges." Raj Irudaya led three sessions. He emphasized three features of Jesus Mission: 1) to the marginalized 2) to the women and 3) to the non-Jewish people. The overall purpose of Jesus mission was to make the marginalized, the women and those outside of the Jewish community, children of God, members of the Kingdom of God. He interpreted Jesus' mission from the perspective of the Dalit, women and the pluri-religious, cultural context of India. The morning session started with Holy communion led by Dr. P. Manoharan (Gurukul Director), Rev. Sandeep Theophil (MTh.I -- Communications), Rev. Baset Bassanio Mardi (MTh.I -- Theology) and Ms. Sonia John (MTh.II -- Theology). Dr. K. Rajaratnam,the Director Emeritus of Gurukul, whose Birth day was on August 6th, was also present for the Communion Service. In the evening there was a Birthday celebration in honour of Dr. Rajaratnam for which the chief guest was Archbishop Chinnappa of the Madras-Mylapore Archdiocese. (
